A cluttered basement is a familiar problem for many people. Over the years, old furniture, moving boxes, sports equipment, tools, Christmas decorations, and many other items that are “saved for later” pile up. Eventually, the basement becomes so overcrowded that there’s hardly any space left, and finding what you’re looking for takes a lot of effort.
If you want to declutter and tidy up your basement, now is the right time. With a clear plan, you can eliminate chaos, create storage space, and maintain lasting order in your basement.

Why should you declutter your basement regularly?
A tidy basement offers many advantages. When you declutter your basement, you not only gain additional storage space but also enjoy greater clarity and safety.
By decluttering regularly, you can:
create valuable storage space
get rid of unnecessary clutter
improve organization in your home
find items more quickly
detect moisture damage or pest infestations early on
organize your basement efficiently
It’s especially worth thoroughly decluttering your basement before a move or downsizing.
Decluttering the Basement – The Best Guide
1. Divide the basement into sections
Don’t try to clean out the entire basement in one day. Divide the space into small sections — for example, shelves, individual corners, or cabinets. This keeps the task of decluttering the basement manageable and motivating.
2. Clean out and sort through the basement
Now it’s time to really start decluttering the basement.
Pick up each item and ask yourself:
Do I still need this item?
Have I used it in the last few years?
Does it still work?
Would I keep it again today?
Anything that’s broken, duplicated, or hasn’t been used in years can be discarded. Items in good condition can be sold, given away, or donated.
When decluttering the basement, the rule is: The less clutter, the more space you’ll have.
Here we go. Let's start with the food supplies if you store them in the cellar. Anything that isn't in jars or tins needs to go in a box so that mice can't gnaw on it. Check which food has expired or will expire soon. Put these to one side. Then put the remaining food in the boxes provided. Make sure that the same things go together, e.g. all pasta, sweets or flour/sugar, etc.
Now for the wine stock. Divide into red, white and sparkling wines. If not available, buy wine racks so that you can store the individual bottles. You can leave large stocks in the boxes.
Then come the household supplies, such as cleaning or shower items. Work with boxes here too. Store the items in groups, label the box and put it back on the shelf.

Decorative items, such as Christmas and Easter, packed in boxes. This is best sorted out after Christmas or Easter so that you are ready for the next season. This means putting boxes on the shelf now and labelling boxes if you haven't already done so.
Tools should be packed in toolboxes. Sort out what you have twice beforehand.
Place sewing machine and fabric remnants next to each other on the shelf.
Then you will certainly have bags, backpacks and suitcases in the cellar. Arrange them neatly, sort them out if necessary and put them back on the shelf.
Now for the clothes in the moth cupboards. Once again, you need to clear out everything and sort out items you no longer need for the second-hand shop. Only keep the items that you really need. Everything else can go. Then put the clothes away again.
3. Clean the Basement
After you’ve decluttered your basement, you should clean it thoroughly. Remove dust, dirt, and cobwebs. While you’re at it, check for moisture or mold.
A clean basement is the perfect foundation for a new organization system.
4. Organize the Basement
Now it’s time to get organized. A well-thought-out organization system ensures that your basement stays tidy in the long run.
The following are particularly practical:
Sturdy metal shelves
Clear storage bins
Labeled boxes
Wall mounts for tools
Separate areas for seasonal items, camping gear, supplies, or keepsakes
This way, you can make the most of your storage space and find everything quickly.
What items don’t belong in the basement?
Not all items are suitable for storage in the basement. If possible, avoid storing:
important documents
photo albums
delicate clothing
electronic devices
food in damp basements
These items should be stored in a dry and well-protected place.
Keeping Your Basement Tidy Long-Term
After cleaning out your basement, it’s important to maintain the order you’ve just established.
These tips will help:
Only store new items if you really need them.
Check your basement once a year and declutter it again.
Label all boxes.
Put things back in their designated spots after use.
Sort through items regularly before new chaos sets in.
This way, your basement will stay organized in the long run.
